[NBC On the Struggle to Get a Mainstream Audience for “Hannibal”] (Roth Cornet, IGN.com)

“The show is on the bubble. Hannibal simply does not have the ratings to be considered viable for an extended life on a network.”

  1. One of my favorite shows (to an almost obsessive degree…). I really wish it were more popular and could stick around for a while, but am grateful we’re getting a third season at all. If NBC axes it, hopefully a streaming outlet, like Amazon Prime or Netflix, will pick it up come season 4. Yahoo ended up saving Community recently after that was cancelled, so I’ve got my fingers crossed that the Internet will somehow save Hannibal if worst comes to worst.

    1. I’m right there with you, Michael. It is one of my favorite shows of all TIME. I turn into a bubbling 13-year-old fanboy every time it’s even mentioned.

What I don’t understand is this — if the films had such tremendous mainstream appeal, why not the television show?

I’d love it if some other outlet allowed to show to survive, as you’ve suggested. Hopefully not Amazon Prime … because that’s just way too expensive for a starving artist like me. 😉

      1. lol Yeah, Prime can be pricey but much, much, much cheaper than cable (which we ditched last year).

I think the TV show actually has a lot less mainstream appeal than the movies because the tone and focus is so different. If anything, I think the show is a lot more artsy in its production and cinematography, and a lot less straightforward than the movies were.

It’s a smarter beast and really requires a lot of involvement and attention. It’s hard to categorize; it’s not like a Law & Order cop show and although it’s has procedural elements, it’s not like any other procedural series out there either. But it’s so damn good!
