Yes, “Die Hard” is a Christmas movie. Now get over it and go watch “A Midnight Clear.”

The perennial half-joking debate about whether “Die Hard” (1988) is a Christmas movie will be with us for a long time, I guess.  Yes, it is a Christmas movie — not only does it take place on Christmas Eve, the holiday helps set up the plot.  (Our protagonists are at the besieged Nakatomi Tower for a Christmas party.)  It just happens to be an ironic Christmas movie, that’s all.

And if we’re on the subject of ironic Christmas movies, I have to recommend “A Midnight Clear” (1992).  It’s one of those films that doesn’t deserve its obscurity.  It’s absolutely exceptional and poetic, which makes it maddening to me that a lot of people haven’t even heard of it.

I won’t describe it at length, because it’s one of those movies where “the less you know, the more you’ll enjoy it.”  (Even its central plot development is meant to be unexpected.)  I’ve never seen the trailer for this, but I can only imagine that it fails to avoid at least some spoilers.

Suffice to say that “A Midnight Clear” is a truly great film — one I would rate a perfect 10.  It’s perfect.  It just might make you look at war differently.

It’s a collection of contradictions, too.  It’s a war movie with an (arguably) pacifist message, and a “Christmas movie” that is absolutely mournful.  (I am not actually suggesting that anyone watch it to feel festive.)  It’s also a World War II movie made in the 90’s, but it feels as though it’s channeling the sadness and existential loss of the post-Vietnam 1970’s.

Again, if you choose to watch it, learn as little as possible about it beforehand.  And be aware that it’s probably sadder than you think.  Let me know what you think about it, too.  I’m curious about how other people feel about it.

I hated “The Hateful Eight” (2015)

“The Hateful Eight” (2015) might be the first Quentin Tarantino film that I entirely disliked.  I’d rate it a 3 out of 10 for being an overlong, overwrought story inhabited almost exclusively by irritating, overly stylized characters who are constantly shouting.  It was alternately boring and grotesque.  It even managed to occasionally be glumly depressing, given the violence it depicts against defenseless innocents.

And I’m surprised, because this movie was highly recommended to me by my college-aged nephew — he’s a smart kid whose judgment I trust.  I certainly hope that he has seen Tarantino’s classic “Reservoir Dogs” (1992), as that movie seems to be this one’s direct inspiration.  Throughout “The Hateful Eight’s” lengthy running time (it clocks in at just over three hours), I kept thinking that this was a failed effort to transplant “Reservoir Dogs'” story setup to the old west.

That probably was the director’s strategy here.  You see an attempt to recreate all of the story elements that made the earlier movie a success: quirky characters; idiosyncratic dialogue; unexpected violence; tragedy; and black humor.

Regrettably, it just didn’t work.  The movie was so long — and so loud — that it even made priceless performers like Kurt Russell, Samuel L. Jackson and Tim Roth come off as annoying.

For me, the movie’s sole bright spot was Jennifer Jason Leigh’s damned terrific portrayal of the plot-driving, brutal gangster, Daisy Domergue.  I had no idea that Leigh had such incredible range (not to mention some Vaudeville-style comic timing).  Her performance isn’t enough to redeem the movie, but it surprised me and easily stole the show.

Look — if this is the first Tarantino movie you’ve seen, then please don’t let it dissuade you from seeing the man’s other work.  Seriously, go watch “Reservoir Dogs,” “Pulp Fiction” (1994) or “From Dusk Till Dawn” (1996).

“November, Blue Ridge Mountains, 1992,” by Eric Robert Nolan (recited by the author)

This is me reciting a very short love poem that I wrote in college.  “November, Blue Ridge Mountains, 1992” was first published in 2013 by the International Ware Veterans Poetry Archive.

November compelled us to visit the hills
Where ignorant rock and lofty pine
Were witness to our disregard
For strangeness, temptation and time.

But memories are sticky things.
Will any mountain ever let
Me dream again? Can I now
Feel rain without regret?

 

That totally weird moment when Trump reminds you of a scene in “Batman Returns” (1992) …

I can’t be the only person who’s thought of this.   It’s been bugging me since I first saw the footage of Donald Trump throwing paper towels to people in Puerto Rico.

Doesn’t it remind you of villain Max Shreck throwing presents to Gothamites in “Batman Returns” (1992)?  It’s at .15 in the clip below.

Those flying white-faced goddam circus freaks near the end of the scene could be his cabinet members.  Jeff Sessions could fly that high if somebody threw him, right?
