“An Open Letter to President Donald J. Trump Upon His Acquittal,” by Eric Robert Nolan

[REBLOGGING THIS IN LIGHT OF RECENT EVENTS]

Eric Robert Nolan's avatarEric Robert Nolan, Author

Dear Mr. President:

You were wrongly acquitted. You cannot know that, I think, because your addled mind cannot distinguish between your own interests and those of the Republic.

But you are not truly a victor. The adulation of your following is fervent now, but it will not last forever. The world’s memory is long, and the books that you eschew will nevertheless labor to make you their detailed subject.

History will remember you as a dangerous, cruel and unabashed child — unfit for office, heedless of counsel, loathe to lead, pernicious to freedom and bereft of ability. Your mark upon it will be bleak. Generations will look back dismally at how someone so feckless could assail, from within its highest office, the world’s greatest Republic.

You are not truly a victor — not even now, in these few, vainglorious years of your imagined triumph, as you exult dumbly with your…

The best thing on the net right now:

If I could pick a single thing on the Internet that I would recommend to another American right now, it would be the Facebook page of Dr. Heather Cox Richardson.  Richardson is an author, political historian and Professor of History at Boston College who posts regular commentary about history and politics.  She admirably breaks things down in plain language that is accessible to a layperson — but she doesn’t dumb things down either.  (Her commentary about the January 6th coup attempt has been invaluable.)

She has a websitea Twitter page, and a Youtube channel too, but for some reason I find her Facebook uploads a little easier to navigate.  (And that’s weird, because Facebook’s configuration typically feels clumsier to me than that of other platforms.)

Anyway, do check out her videos.

“A helpful rule of thumb I borrowed from a friend.”

[COPIED FROM FACEBOOK]  A helpful rule of thumb I borrowed from a friend.

Huge numbers of our population believe in a complete alternate reality. Alternate facts as it were.

But just as intensely as I believe they are deluded, they think I am the one who is deluded. Maybe I am. So how can I be confident in my perception? It can be quite difficult.

But, I have found that in times of political confusion, particularly when emotions are running high and creating tunnel vision, the presence of Nazis can be an extremely helpful indicator.

If I am attending a local demonstration or event and I see Nazis…neo-Nazis, casual Nazis, master race Nazis, or the latest-whatever-uber-mythology-Nazis, I figure out which side they are on.

And if they are on my side of the demonstration? I am on the wrong side.
It is tough to argue moral equivalence when I am standing next to a Nazi. Look to my right. Is there a guy wearing a 6MWE (6 million wasn’t enough) t-shirt? I am on the wrong side. Look to my left. If that guy is wearing a Camp Auschwitz t-shirt? Wrong side.

Are Speakers being applauded for referring to things that Hitler got right? Wrong side. Team-spirit face paint and hat with animal horns? This is actually an unclear indicator that could mean anything, but safest to keep my distance from that guy anyway, even at a football game.

However, I can always, always, always rely on the presence of Nazis as a guiding light through a fog of disinformation.

Some things are relative, and politics can absolutely have it’s opposing sides and grey areas.

But evil and good are absolute. As are the lessons of history.

So, just look for the Nazis, and make your own decisions.

(I’ve done some soul-searching.)

Maybe there’s some truth to the accusations of “Trump Derangement Syndrome.”

Because, if you think about it, the worst thing he’s done in four years is incite a large-scale terror attack against a full third of the United States government, not to mention his own Vice President and his family.
