Oh, God — I love the Scots!!

If Ginger Jesus can do it, then so can we.

“Two Sisters (On the Terrace),” Pierre-Auguste Renoir, 1881

Oil on canvas.

This is the very same painting that Donald Trump falsely claimed to own.  (The original is housed at the Art Institute of Chicago, which publicly corrected him.)

That totally weird moment when Trump reminds you of a scene in “Batman Returns” (1992) …

I can’t be the only person who’s thought of this.   It’s been bugging me since I first saw the footage of Donald Trump throwing paper towels to people in Puerto Rico.

Doesn’t it remind you of villain Max Shreck throwing presents to Gothamites in “Batman Returns” (1992)?  It’s at .15 in the clip below.

Those flying white-faced goddam circus freaks near the end of the scene could be his cabinet members.  Jeff Sessions could fly that high if somebody threw him, right?

My day has been a disaster.

Somebody toss some paper towels at me.

That’ll help.

Trump doesn’t want people to know about A.C.A. enrollment. (So let’s spread the word.)

I found this message on Facebook this afternoon, and then verified it over at Snopes.com.  I shared it, and am posting it here as well:

[The Affordable Care Act (ACA / Obamacare) enrollment period was shortened and the Trump administration has cut funding to advertise these deadlines by 90%. The website for enrolling will be taken off-line every weekend, thus preventing weekend enrollment. This is a tactic to decrease enrollment. BE SURE TO ENROLL ON WEEKDAYS! Enrollment for 2018 ACA / Obamacare starts November 1 and ends December 15 …  This isn’t intended to spam, we have to do grassroots promotion to keep enrollment up because Trump is trying to get ACA to crumble due to low enrollment numbers.]

Help spread the word, folks, please.

A very short review of the Season 7 premiere of “American Horror Story” (2017)

I finally got around to watching my first episode of “American Horror Story” last night; I started with this season’s critically praised premiere.  (People have been enthusiastically recommending this show to me for years, and “Game of Thrones” taught me that the bandwagon isn’t always a bad thing.)

I can’t say that I was overly impressed.  Season 7’s opening episode, entitled “Election Night,” consists mostly of heavy-handed political commentary with caricaturized portrayals of both Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton supporters.  Nearly none of the characters are likable; not even the one played by the terrific Evan Peters.  (Yes, comics fans, that’s none other than Quicksilver from the latest “X-Men” movies.)

There is a lot of “scary clown” horror here, as anyone who’s seen any marketing for the show at all should know.  Between that and the political elements, I suspect I am not the right audience for this show.  I simply find clowns obnoxious instead of scary, and political commentary in horror usually falls flat with me.  (I’m the rare horror fan who loves George A. Romero’s work only because it’s scary, without caring much about the social statements he’s supposedly making.)

With all of that said, there actually were a couple of creepy moments late in the game.  And there was one (as of yet, minor) character that I liked — the child of the liberal couple who were so devastated by the election results.  He’s cute, and any kid who hides parentally forbidden horror comics under his pillow is one of my tribe.

I’d somewhat grudgingly rate this a 5 out of 10.

Anyway … scary clowns are ubiquitous now, and we already have the zombie shows we need.  I propose that we bring back … body snatchers.  Those can be terrifying in the hands of a talented writer, and they require no special effects.  Or, what about vampires?  Now that “The Strain” has concluded, how about a well written television excursion into Steve Niles’ “30 Days of Night” universe?  Or maybe a “Stakeland” TV show?  Looking at you, AMC.

The New York Times’ “Trump Poetry Contest”

Nicholas Kristof at the The New York Times is conducting a contest for poems about Donald Trump.  (And he is explicitly encouraging Trump supporters to share any creative work they might want to submit in the president’s defense.)  This is a partnership with the Poetry Society of America.

For more information, see Kristof’s September 15th column here.

Soooo …

America’s new plans for the War in Afghanistan were announced yesterday by a man who was also photographed yesterday staring into the solar eclipse without protection.

Do I have that right?

Tonight’s thoughts:

  • I wonder how long it will take for people to start referring to the Trump administration as the Turd Reich?  I can’t be the first person who thought of this. The pun is too easy.

  • “You had a group on one side that was bad, and you had a group on the other side that was also very violent. And nobody wants to say that.”  I wonder … is this how he would describe World War II?

  • I’m thinking of renouncing my past statements of admiration for the French resistance during World War II.  It has been brought to my attention that they were operating with a government permit.

  • The Russians. The Nazis. Foreign dictators.  It’s like the only people who Trump won’t criticize are the villains from 1980’s action movies.  What’s next? Is he going to tacitly defend Zuul from goddam “Ghostbusters?”

“He will only go so far in condemning the racist elements, because he still needs them.”

The following is reprinted with permission from my Facebook friend, Leo Kirby:

“This represents a turning point for the people of this country. We are determined to take our country back. We are going to fulfill the promises of Donald Trump. That’s what we believed in. That why we voted for Donald Trump. Because he said he’s going to take our country back. And that’s what we got to do.” – David Duke

This. I know Donnie supporters hate to talk about racism, unless they are calling President Obama racist, which many of them love to do. But racism is definitely a part of the Donnie Minion Movement. I remind them it’s the same thing they like to say about Muslims and terrorists. Not all Trump supporters are racist, but most white nationalist, anti-semite, KKK, American Nazi Party members certainly seem to be Trump supporters. What do you think that is about?

By the end of April, anti-Semitic attacks were up 86% over 2016, and one third of all incidents in 2106 occurred in the last 2 months of the year, after Donnie was elected. What do you think that is about?

If you listen to David Duke, he seems to think it is about taking the country back and that Donnie was speaking to the KKK when he said it. Donnie still has people like Steve Bannon and Sebastian Gorka in his administration, both with ties to the alternate right. And when he made a statement against “hate” he blamed “many sides.” That was so important to him he said it twice. Not unlike his statement about the holocaust where he didn’t mention the Jews because “many suffered.”

He can’t bring himself to say “white nationalists” or “KKK” or “Nazis,” and when a Mosque is blown up in Minnesota he ignores it while Gorka suggests the the left could have done it to blame the right. And when a White Supremacist drives his car into a crowd, killing one person and injuring 19 others, he can’t bring himself to say “domestic terrorism” or “white Nationalist terrorism.” And yet, it was so important to him to say “Islamic Terrorism.” He has just as much trouble condemning these people as he does condemning Vladimir Putin.

So in his absence Republicans like Marco Rubio and Orrin Hatch have to condemn these racist elements that support Donnie.

So maybe not all people who voted for Donnie are racists, and not all racists are Republicans. But the guy they voted for said this, long before he decided to run for president:

“A well-educated black has a tremendous advantage over a well-educated white in terms of the job market…if I was starting off today, I would love to be a well-educated black, because I really do believe they have the actual advantage today.”

Even though there is virtually no proof for this, it doesn’t matter. Because he says, “I really do believe,” it. Just like the white nationalists, anti-semites, KKK, and members of the American Nazi Party believe it.

There was a study done by the University of Washington (and many others since that one) that showed that members of the Tea Party movement had a 25% higher probability of having “racist resentment” than others in the study who did not identify with the Tea Party. And studies done by several organizations showed that Republicans who who scored highest on racial resentment were 30% more likely to vote for Donnie.

Donnie was fully aware of this element that was in the country when he started his campaign by calling Mexican illegal immigrants drug dealers and rapists, and he pursued them and has been pursuing them ever since. This is why he will only go so far in condemning the racist elements, because he still needs them.

So Donnie Minions can whine when people talk about racism, but everyone who voted for him him heard him talk about the “Mexican” judge who was born in Indiana and the Muslim Gold Star Mother who “probably wasn’t allowed” to speak. It’s like one Tea Party supporter said when she was fuming about being called racist, “My pastor is black!”

So yeah. It makes sense that David Duke thinks he is fulfilling Donnie’s promises. Donnie has been speaking directly to him and people like him for years.
